Sorry! Wednesday, March 09, 2005
Gosh, sorry guys! I haven't written in quite a while about Troy. Troy has been such a fun little boy to raise, and now at 8 months old. I can't believe how big he is. He hasn't been weighed since his 6 month Well-Baby Visit, so I'm not sure how big he is in numbers, but he has grown, that's for sure. I actually think that maybe he's losing weight because his metabolism is working so well now that he's mobile. Crawling is one of Troy's favorite things to do now. He's gotten riskier with his movements too, chasing the vaccum cleaner or trying to chase his dad out the front door before it gets shut behind him (Bruce) when he goes to work or classes. I bet he'll be walking in no time at all. He's so good at crawling now, and he goes for what he wants. He can also stand. He pulls himself up to things, but he hasn't attempted to stand without holding on, or walk alone yet. That won't be too far off though, I'm betting. Troy is also doing well with the signs, although we haven't had much progress since what I blogged about previous to this when it came to signing. He still responds to the sign for milk, but hasn't made the sign himself yet, and hasn't picked up on any of the others, it seems. I guess Bruce and I are slacking a bit. I hope within the next 2 months he'll start picking them up more so he can communicate with us better. It's so neat to see Troy interact with other people. He gets excited when his dad comes home from work, and although I don't think he suffers from seperation anxiety, Bruce has said that sometimes he fusses for a few minutes whenever Troy sees me leave. I'm glad seperation anxiety hasn't been a big issue with him yet, and hopefully won't be in the future. Troy loves to play with his cousins, too, and especially likes it when adults talk and play with him. He's a real people person, and you can tell by the way he blushes, flirts and babbles. He babbles a lot, by the way. Bruce and I think that he'll learn to be articulate and pick words up quickly because we don't use baby words with him, like "ba-ba" for bottle. We call it a bottle. Or as another example "blankie-wankie", but we call it a blanket, like NORMAL human beings. LoL I think most parents get in to the habit of doing that, baby talking, and don't realize that they do it. We on the other hand, don't to it and didn't notice until just now, at the end of Troy's 7th month, that we DON'T baby talk him. He's very sociable and we like that in him. It's a great part of his personality because he loves people, and you can see it on his cute little face when he has person to person interaction with both kids, other babies, and adults. Troy's personality has also flourished in other ways too, like with curiousity. He's lost interest in a lot of his toys, but because he can crawl now, he loves looking for new things. He'll stand himself up at the couch, or our bed, just to see if he can reach something new to explore and stick in his mouth. He loves finding things and chasing people, curious as to what we're doing and where we're going without him. LoL It's fun. If anyone still reads this and you have kids, what your infants personalities like? Do they have other ones than the ones I listed for Troy? Share with me!!! ASL Thursday, February 17, 2005
Please forgive me for not blogging for a while. I've seemed to have been neglecting all of my blogs, and not just this one, so it's not you, people! LoL Troy has been doing very well lately, despite his crankiness. He has two bottom teeth that are coming in together. I had thought that most infants get one tooth at a time with their first few teeth, but his have come in equally. I don't know if that's true or if it's just some random thing that I thought without any substance behind it. Either way, I'm very proud of Troy for enduring through the pain and discomfort, even if every other infant goes through the same. Crawling is one of Troy's new favorite things. He's been doing it a lot more, but he still gets plenty face plants in and he hasn't given up on the military crawl completely either. He is rolling a LOT less though, so I know that he's well on his way to desserting the military crawl too. Oh! Troy has been sitting up for months now, but within the last few days he has learned how to sit himself up. At first he would crawl to something on the floor so that he could use it to grab, pull up on, and scoot his little butt underneath him, but not anymore. Now he has figured out how to manuver himself in a way that will get him sitting upright without any help whatsoever. Again, I'm very proud of him! The most recently amazing thing to me though, is that my little monster is a genius. LoL Ok, maybe that's going overboard, but he IS extremely smart and picks up on things very quickly. Bruce and I decided together that we would only use the phrase "Not for Babies" when Troy gets in to something that he's not supposed to and "no" only where applicable. We don't want one of Troy's first words to be "no" because so many children DO and then they go through a phase where NO is the only thing worth saying to their parents. I want to delay that for at least a year or two if possible! LoL Anyway, Troy mostly just ignores us when we tell him that something is "not for babies," but I believe he's beginning to understand what it means because when he is headed toward, for example, the fireplace, I tell him "not for babies" and he stops, turns to look at me, then looks back at the fireplace. I tell him again, and he looks at me once more. Of course, he chooses to try and reach for the fireplace so I go pick him up and set him somewhere else, but that's just the beginning of his learning. While I was pregnant and just after I had Troy I had read in several magazines about baby signing. I thought it was very interesting how these little infants could communicate so well with their parents without even speaking...or babbling... a word, but I never looked into it after finishing those articles. About a week ago I saw a clip on tv that talked about baby signing and I remembered the articles I'd read. I remembered how they talked about when infants cry it's normally not because they're in pain, it's their form of communication because they have no other way to express themselves, what they want, or their feelings. However, infants are capable of making hand motions and once they pick up on how to do these hand motions, they tend to cry less often because when they learn to sign they have a way to show what they want or how they feel. I decided that I wanted to try baby signing with Troy to see how well it worked. I started with the easiest one I could remember from the clip on tv... Milk. Whenever I went to give Troy a bottle of milk, I did the sign. Whenever I asked Troy if he wanted some milk, I did the sign. When I show Troy his bottle and he's hungry, you can see in his reaction whether he wants it or not. His face gets an eager, happy look and he reaches his hands out to grab it. When he doesn't want it he just looks at it, looks at me, and then looks away with disinterest. Within 3 days of the first time I started signing, Troy had begun to react the same way to the milk sign as he does to his bottle. Last night, about 5 days after I first started signing milk, with Bruce doing the same, Troy did something neither one of us expected. Bruce had put Troy in his carseat while I was making a bottle. We had signed to him, milk, and he reached his hands out as if to grab for it, but he did the sign instead! Bruce pointed it out and I was exstatic! Of course, he may or may not continue to use the sign though. I started to do more research on baby signing and I read that some infants will use signs a few times, and then they'll just stop doing them for a period. Some will act like they have no idea what you're doing, but then all of a sudden they know how to do and are using 10 different signs. And some pick up on it like any other way of learning, by just practicing and doing it, taking each sign up slowly and working on it. I also decided to look at other signs that I could use for Troy but I didn't know if I should make up my own signs, like one article had suggested, or use an already written sign language. I decided on American Sign Language, and I found a nice easy website to help me learn the signs too. Now Bruce and I are beginning to use other baby words to sign like hungry, baby, mom, dad, good, restroom (potty), toys, all in addition to milk. We're also signing the word "Peanut" to him, as he already responds to that being spoken (as well as Troy) for his name. Let me know if you have a baby and decide to do baby signing too! Gotta go! Troy is crawling out of the room. LoL Tuttie Two-Tooth Magoo! Friday, February 11, 2005
One day after finding Troy's first tooth had cut, his second tooth cut through, so he's been a little crankier than usual. I'm so excited for him though. He seems to love his new chompers. He bites anything and everything (except for when I'm nursing him... luckily, I haven't had to endure that experience yet!). Troy is also crawling a lot more. He still rolls around, but usually he's just trying to roll over once with a little too much momentum. He likes to really crawl, for the most part, but sometimes we'll catch him army crawling to his destinations. Troy has been giving lots of hugs and kisses lately too. He's done both for a while now, wrapping his arms around our necks, and putting his slobbery opened mouth to our cheeks and humming (much like we do when we kiss and say muuuuah!), but now he's doing both a lot more, and he knows what he's really doing. He can understand what "kisses" are and he knows that "hugs" will get him a big warm "awwwwww!" I love it! Such a momma's boy. 7 months old Wednesday, February 09, 2005
Troy's cough hasn't gone away, but it hasn't worsened either. Because of this, we haven't gone in to see the doctor yet, as they said we should only need to bring him in if he gets worse. We're not sure what the cause of it is either. It could be a cold, another virus besides the common cold, post nasal drip from his runny nose, etc. I hope that it goes away soon, whatever it is. It seems to be a lot better today, but then again, it's only noon. This little monster of mine has been all over the place too. Yesterday and today he seems to be crawling a lot more than before. He always wants to be on his hands and knees even if he's not crawling. He can't figure out why he can't drink from his bottle when he's on his hands or knees, head bent over with the nipple in his mouth, too. He hasn't quite gotten the concept of gravity. Now, I've kept the best for last. Yesterday Troy was extremely cranky. At one point he threw a fit so in order to calm him down, I dipped my finger in grapejuice and stuck it in his mouth, only to find something sharp had veered it's little way out of Troy's gums! His first tooth is cutting! No wonder he has been so fussy and irritable lately! What a great way to roll in Troy's 7 month birthday but by a little tooth appearing! I looked at Troy laying on the floor eating from his bottle and when I did he started whimpering and glaring at me. LoL What a little booger! I love him so much! Pat-a-Cake Pat-a-Cake Baker Man! Bake me a cake as fast as you can! Pat it, and roll it, and poke it, and pull it, And mark it with a 'P'! Then put it in the oven for PEANUT and me! Yaaaaaaay! Whenever Troy and I play Pat-a-Cake, he likes to grab my hands while I clap and do the other actions, but on Wenesday that wasn't the case. I sat him in front of me and I sat legs stretched out in front of him, but this time I didn't sit as close as I normally do. I started singing and clapping and to my surprise, instead of grabbing for my hands, he started clapping along too! He has never done this before! I was shocked (and slightly embarassed <--- for my husband's humor) at how quickly he picked up on how to do it by himself. My precious little baby is growing up everyday, right before my eyes! I am so incredibly lucky to be a stay at home mom! I made a mistake. Troy isn't so little anymore. He's HUGE! At least he's huge compared to when he was first born. I can't even carry him in his carseat for long periods of time anymore because he's so heavy that the handle gives me bruises across my arms if I do. I'm amazed at how quickly he has picked up so many things. He used his infant carrier to pull himself into the sitting position yesterday from the crawling position. And he's crawling more too, although if he really wants to get somewhere quickly he won't even attempt it. He'll still act like a steam roller on steriods, flipping all over the place to get where he wants to go. If his mind is set on a shorter distance, he does try and crawl though. I'm still waiting for the opportunity to go get a new USB cable to hook up our digital camera. I'm so anxious to get these pictures up! I love being able to capture my baby growing up in still moments so I don't have to try and remember how he looked. Now I just wish I could share those moments with everyone else! Grr! LoL Troy is coughing in his sleep. He's coughing a little more each day, starting on Wednesday, so I think he may be coming down with a cold or maybe it's just a cough. He's been sleeping a little bit more lately too. I'm not sure at what point I'm supposed to call the doctor, but I don't think that it's very serious right now, so if it gets a bit worse within the next few days I'll be calling to find out what else I need to do for him. I really hope he's not getting sick with something other than the common cold. That's all I need is to worry more about him, as if I don't do that enough. Yes, I'm a paranoid mother... and I think all mothers should be. It's how we love!
